Like many players, Magglio Ordonez has been ineffective to start the season but will likely see his numbers improve.
• The cool thing about baseball is that one month never tells the story. People can have bad months, halves of seasons, and even full years.
But never look too much into April numbers. Be glad all the hits happened (see: Brennan Boesch) and look forward to the players who are due.
Take Magglio Ordonez, for example. He's rolling over a lot of pitches right now and also popping out. He also had three strikeouts Thursday afternoon, and that brings his season total to just 10. Still, he's very much been a contact hitter. He's only hitting .200 when the ball is put into play, so this number ought to go up as the season matures, bringing his batting average back to at least near the Magglio Ordonez we all remember. [Beyond the Box Score]
• Um, there's some type of monster on Justin Verlander's back telling him to pitch bad, or something. [Roar of the Tigers]
• CBS doles out their fantasy player rankings of catchers and middle relievers — two great tastes which go together — and Victor Martinez is No. 7 on their list, but no sign of Alex Avila or any of the Tigers' bullpen, such as setup man Joaquin Benoit. [CBS Sports]
• We gave some proper guff to the Tigers for being slow on the basepaths yesterday, but at least all of the regulars on the team have stolen a base. We bring you Exhibit A: Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Chris Snyder, who has zero stolen bases in 2,094 plate appearances. He's been caught stealing twice. As the article points out, even Cecil Fielder had career stolen bases. [Wall Street Journal]
• When your team gets swept by a poor team, it always helps to look at another team's dysfunctions. White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was ejected from Wednesday's affair against the Yankees, then promptly went to Twitter to vet his grievances. This is a no-no according to MLB's social media policy, and he could get some penalties for this. [ESPN]
• And this is just an awful statistic, people:

Magglio Ordonez isn't the fastest guy with two legs, which might explain why few Tigers can go from first to third on a single.
• The legs of Brandon Inge, Miguel Cabrera, Magglio Ordonez, Jhonny Peralta and Victor Martinez might explain it all.
But the Tigers are one of the poorest baserunning teams when discussing advancing extra bases on singles and doubles. Only the New York Yankees are worse, but they've always been a station-to-station team that bashes the ball and breaks the scoreboard with home runs.
For many other baserunning stats the Tigers are very average; they get thrown out on the basepaths just about as much as everyone else, and their percentage of baserunners scored is also right on par.
Look, speed is nice but it's not a necessity to score runs. However, if the ball can't find the gap or the seats, it could be a long night. This is something else to consider why the Tigers leave so many men on base; it's because they're not going from first to third or from second to home well enough. You can't always chalk it up to hitters not being clutch. [Baseball-Reference]
• Read Lynn Henning's column on Jim Leyland and you may have a better understanding of why this guy is not getting fired anytime soon. But hey, keep on blaming him after every loss. [Detroit News]
• Now this ... this is just mean. It's a doctored "hit tracker" on Miguel Olivo's home run yesterday. [FanGraphs]
• Best wishes to Roy Oswalt and his family in Mississippi, currently dealing with tornado damage. It looks like his parents' house was lost in the storms. Stay safe down there. [USA Today]
• Oakland Alameda County Coliseum is now going to be called the Overstock.com Coliseum. It's funny, because the Athletics' pitching staff is basically a big department store for other teams. Too bad the Tigers didn't save their receipt for that Bonderman they acquired. [HardballTalk]
