Vatican sees no future for married clergy in Anglican Ordinariate

From The Anglican Journal-

Married priests will be only a temporary aberration within the Anglican Ordinariate, says Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican?s secretary of state. Speaking in an interview in the Vatican newspaper, L?Osservatore Romano, and in recently published extracts from his forthcoming book, A Great Heart: Homage to John Paul II, Bertone said that although already married Anglican priests will be acceptable under the ordinariate, ?the enduring value of celibacy will be reaffirmed, necessitating that for the future, unmarried priests will be the norm in such ordinariates.?

Until then, the procedures developed by Pope John Paul II for the reception of already married Anglican clergy will apply.

Cardinal Bertone added that Anglican clergy seeking full communion with the church of Rome should undergo training with ?other diocesan seminarians, thereby ensuing them serious academic, pastoral and spiritual preparation. The acceptance of these Anglicans will be considered in the context of their allegiance to the doctrine and practices of the Catholic church.?

Johnny Damon Makes History

When Johnny Damon hit a walk-off home run in the 10th inning of Thursday night's Tampa Bay Rays-Minnesota Twins game, the 10,042 in attendance probably didn't know that they witnessed history.

How do you ask?

Well...check out this offering from Marc Tompin of the St. Petersburg Times:

Damon became the first major-leaguer to hit walkoff homers for five different teams, having also done the deed for the Royals, Red Sox, Yankees, and Tigers (twice).

I realize I didn't dig up the stat first...but when you bust that out this weekend and tell your friends...please say you saw it here.

Power Rankings Explained: How Good Are the Rockies, Really?

By Bill

Earlier today (and last week), The Common Man put up a post explaining more fully the pithy comments he made for the three AL teams not represented by other SweetSpot bloggers for this week's power rankings.

Well, I wrote the comments for the four unspoken-for NL teams -- the Marlins, Pirates, Diamondbacks and Rockies -- and I'm not going to be doing that. I don't think I have all that much to say about one week for each of these teams (especially since I'll be finding something to say about them again two weeks from now). But if I have something worth saying, I'll say it here.

Today I do want to talk about the Rockies. We write these comments but don't vote on the rankings, so I didn't know (though perhaps it's not surprising given their 14-7 overall record) that the Rox, after a 2-4 week in which they lost series to both the Giants and Marlins, would drop from the #1 spot on the list only down to #3. While my final takeaway in the comment was that "they're in good shape," I don't think they're in number three in baseball shape, and there's a good chance they're headed toward something more like 12 or 13. Here's why.

First, their offense depends heavily on one player who isn't going to keep up his current pace, and probably isn't as good as it's looked. Troy Tulowitzki is amazing, but probably won't finish the year hitting .330, OBPing .430 or slugging over .700. They're also getting better-than-expected contributions from Todd Helton and second baseman Jonathan Herrera. On the other hand, last year's triple crown candidate Carlos Gonzalez has been awful, at .228/.284/.304. He'll almost certainly get better, but I don't think he's anywhere near the player he looked like last season, and I'd expect the falloffs from those other three to exceed the gain in CarGo's production.

Either way, though, the Rockies' offense still isn't that great. They've scored the third most runs in the National League, but the team's wRC+ is just 90, OPS+ just 86; they play in what is still the most hitter-friendly park in baseball, and they might also be benefiting from some of those famous "timely hits" that they can't expect will continue to fall at just the right times.

I'd be even a bit more concerned about the pitching. It's been legitimately good -- fourth in the NL in both FIP and xFIP -- even with ace Ubaldo Jimenez getting knocked around to the tune of a 6.75 ERA and 5.61 FIP through his first four starts. Can it last, though? Jorge de la Rosa has never been nearly as good in the majors as he has been so far in '11. Jhoulys Chacin entered 2011 as a very promising starter, but had been getting it done in the majors with K rates above 9; so far this season, his strikeout rate is just 6.00 per nine, but he's walking fewer and coaxing more grounders than he ever has before. It might just be a flukish four starts, and if the strikeouts don't come back, he could be in some trouble. Jason Hammel and Esmil Rogers probably just aren't very good. Obviously, getting Jimenez back to his 2010 form would be a total game-changer here. So far, he's striking out fewer and allowing more fly balls (and many, many more home runs) this year than last, which by itself sounds fixable, but then you notice that his average fastball velocity is down more than four miles an hour from last year.

Again, I think this is a good team, all in all. But Rockies fans just shouldn't get too comfortable in that #3 slot.

SweetSpot Roundup 4/27

In today's roundup, Randy Wolf takes a step forward and Colby Lewis takes a step back.  Derek Jeter hangs A-Rod out to dry while Rick Ankiel has no one to blame but himself.  And coffee is for closers (so the Phillies don't get any).

Austin's Astros 290 Blog: Good reading on run differentials
Austin links to a really importnat post by Christina Kahrl that may have missed your attention.

Disciples of Uecker (Brewers): Wolf in Wolf's Clothing
"Over his last three starts, Wolf has thrown 20.2 innings, striking out 19 batters, walking five, and allowing only one solo home run, the only run he?s allowed in this stretch. What?s different?"

Fungoes (Cardinals): What were the Cardinals doing with weekend hit-and-runs?
"In the weekend series against the Reds, the Cardinals attempted a hit-and-run three times. None succeeded." What went wrong?

Bay City Ball (Giants): I Want to Believe in Gary Brown
Chris Quick digs deep to see what the future holds for a Giants prospect.

Nationals Baseball: Ankiel, Straight to the Bench
"As others have said before me, "The Rick Ankiel Story" would make a good movie....  Too bad the original story has spurned on some terrible sequels."  This is actually a terrific little article and a great hook.

Ducksnorts (Padres): Quick Hits, Checking In On the Prospects
Good news, Padres fans, there might be some hitting help on the way.

Crashburn Alley (Phillies): Glengarry Greg Gross
You know what it takes to hit in this league? Brass balls.  Also, no one gets coffee on the Phillies, since coffee is for closers.

Redleg Nation: Checking the Patient's Pulse
An overview of the first 14% of the 2011 season. Wow, going fast, isn't it?

Ghostrunner on First (Blue Jays): Fire When Ready (Which Is Always)
Yunel Escobar swings at first pitches kind of a lot, but that's not really a bad thing.

Baseball Time in Arlington (Rangers): Colby Lewis, The Meltdown, And My Crisis Of Understanding
"If there actually is something not right physically with Colby (and it won't shock me if that proves to be the case), where do you turn for your No. 6 starter until Tommy Hunter returns perhaps 10-14 days from now? For that matter, how does this modify your thinking about the Rangers' chances of succeeding in the playoffs -- and their thought process at the trade deadline -- if Colby ends up not being right for a long period of time and nobody can quite figure out why?"

Fire Brand of the AL (Red Sox): Top 5 Reasons Clay Buchholz Can Recover
Basically everything has gone wrong for Buchholz so far (until today, when he just got BABIP'ed to death), but the good news that comes with that is that basically everything is destined to get better.

Royals Authority: The Glove Versus The Bat
Alcides Escobar, who can't hit, vs. Chris Getz, who can't field. Who should play?

It's About the Money, Stupid (Yankees): Jeter should have had A-Rod's back.
"Whether Jeter ?accepted? A-Rod or notas the nominal captain of the Yankees, a fan favorite, and a teammate of Alex Rodriguez, Jeter should have stuck up for A-Rod at some point. Whether he liked him or not, sticking up for a teammate is just part of being a professional. Especially when there?s supposedly so much value stemming from your leadership qualities."

The Barry Zito Car Accident 911 Call

Remember that car crash that San Francisco Giants pitcher Barry Zito got into last month on the eve of the new season?

Well, according to the one 911 callers...it apparently looked like something out of the God awful "Fast and the Furious" movies.,

That's right, if you listen to the 911 call audio (courtesy of Thirty Mile Zone) one of the cars involved in the now-mustached hurler's accident went "off the ground"!

Now, I'm not sure if that is awesome or not, but if a car goes airborne in an accident...nevermind, it's totally awesome!

JC Down, Zags Up

JC Romero has fallen victim to the DL, while Mike Zagurski gets the call up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley where he's pitched 3.1 scoreless innings with 7 K's. Romero has been erratic (imagine that), and is no big loss. He suffered a strained right calf in last night's loss.

Wonder if we can workout an "injury" for Kyle Kendrick and Mike Martinez too? How about lacerated labia for the prior and anonymously-useless disease for the latter. Michael Stutes seems like a better option in relief than KK and 3 week old dog dung would be better than Mini-Mart. Whatever, all is well...all is well.

Detroit Tigers Links: Magglio Ordonez is due to break out of slump

Like many players, Magglio Ordonez has been ineffective to start the season but will likely see his numbers improve.

magglio-ordonez.jpgLike many players, Magglio Ordonez has been ineffective to start the season but will likely see his numbers improve.

• The cool thing about baseball is that one month never tells the story. People can have bad months, halves of seasons, and even full years.

But never look too much into April numbers. Be glad all the hits happened (see: Brennan Boesch) and look forward to the players who are due.

Take Magglio Ordonez, for example. He's rolling over a lot of pitches right now and also popping out. He also had three strikeouts Thursday afternoon, and that brings his season total to just 10. Still, he's very much been a contact hitter. He's only hitting .200 when the ball is put into play, so this number ought to go up as the season matures, bringing his batting average back to at least near the Magglio Ordonez we all remember. [Beyond the Box Score]

• Um, there's some type of monster on Justin Verlander's back telling him to pitch bad, or something. [Roar of the Tigers]

• CBS doles out their fantasy player rankings of catchers and middle relievers — two great tastes which go together — and Victor Martinez is No. 7 on their list, but no sign of Alex Avila or any of the Tigers' bullpen, such as setup man Joaquin Benoit. [CBS Sports]

• We gave some proper guff to the Tigers for being slow on the basepaths yesterday, but at least all of the regulars on the team have stolen a base. We bring you Exhibit A: Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Chris Snyder, who has zero stolen bases in 2,094 plate appearances. He's been caught stealing twice. As the article points out, even Cecil Fielder had career stolen bases. [Wall Street Journal]

• When your team gets swept by a poor team, it always helps to look at another team's dysfunctions. White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was ejected from Wednesday's affair against the Yankees, then promptly went to Twitter to vet his grievances. This is a no-no according to MLB's social media policy, and he could get some penalties for this. [ESPN]

• And this is just an awful statistic, people:

The Mariners have scored 41% of their runs against the Tigersless than a minute ago via TweetDeck Favorite Retweet Reply

• Free, yet strange, advertising: You can guy a coney dog for 25 cents at nearby A&W resturants the day after Ryan Raburn (#25) hits a home run in a baseball game. [Comcast] (link is a video file)

Won

Aside from a couple stinkers, the Phillies have been absolutely dominating to open the 2011 season. Now at 7-2 after the shutout victory over the Braves this afternoon, the Phils have won all 3 series this year. Their run differential is +26. That's good.

Early Observations & Notes:

*So good so far for Jose Contreras, or as Manuel likes to call him, The Big Truck, in the closer's role.

*Shane Victorino had 9 base knocks in Atlanta.

*Cole Hamels is okay after all.

*Charlie Manuel likes Michael Martinez way more than me. Actually, I don't like him at all.

*Ben Francisco is hitting well enough to replace Werth, but his defense has been unsightly.

*The pitching staff has twirled 2 shutouts. Nice.

Jacoby Ellsbury, Free Swinger?

Detroit Tigers Links: More proof the Tigers are slow to round the bases

Magglio Ordonez isn't the fastest guy with two legs, which might explain why few Tigers can go from first to third on a single.

magglio-ordonez-running.jpgMagglio Ordonez isn't the fastest guy with two legs, which might explain why few Tigers can go from first to third on a single.

• The legs of Brandon Inge, Miguel Cabrera, Magglio Ordonez, Jhonny Peralta and Victor Martinez might explain it all.

But the Tigers are one of the poorest baserunning teams when discussing advancing extra bases on singles and doubles. Only the New York Yankees are worse, but they've always been a station-to-station team that bashes the ball and breaks the scoreboard with home runs.

For many other baserunning stats the Tigers are very average; they get thrown out on the basepaths just about as much as everyone else, and their percentage of baserunners scored is also right on par.

Look, speed is nice but it's not a necessity to score runs. However, if the ball can't find the gap or the seats, it could be a long night. This is something else to consider why the Tigers leave so many men on base; it's because they're not going from first to third or from second to home well enough. You can't always chalk it up to hitters not being clutch. [Baseball-Reference]

• Read Lynn Henning's column on Jim Leyland and you may have a better understanding of why this guy is not getting fired anytime soon. But hey, keep on blaming him after every loss. [Detroit News]

• Now this ... this is just mean. It's a doctored "hit tracker" on Miguel Olivo's home run yesterday. [FanGraphs]

• Best wishes to Roy Oswalt and his family in Mississippi, currently dealing with tornado damage. It looks like his parents' house was lost in the storms. Stay safe down there. [USA Today]

• Oakland Alameda County Coliseum is now going to be called the Overstock.com Coliseum. It's funny, because the Athletics' pitching staff is basically a big department store for other teams. Too bad the Tigers didn't save their receipt for that Bonderman they acquired. [HardballTalk]
